Easier Internet Calls, but Only With Vonage

Customers of phone services like Vonage, which convert voice signals into digital data and send them over the Internet, enjoy a number of advantages over people with traditional phone lines, like cheaper calls and fancy voice-mail and call-forwarding features. But getting started with what is known as VoIP, or voice over Internet protocol, is still a little daunting. The VTech IP-8100-2 broadband phone system can make things easier - if your VoIP company is Vonage.

The system, available at major consumer electronic stores for 0 (or 0 after a rebate) includes two cordless handsets and a base station that serves as both a Vonage adapter and a broadband Internet router. You could just plug a standard cordless phone into a stand-alone Vonage adapter, but the idea of this system is to simplify the set-up process and cut down on clutter.

The system has caller ID, a 50-name phone book and a voice-mail indicator, and it allows you to add up to two additional handsets for each. It won't work for customers of Vonage competitors like Packet8 or Broadvox, but if one of those is your service, take heart. As the popularity of Internet phone service picks up, the selection of VoIP-ready phones on the market is sure to grow.
