Give Him What He Wants
Spead the word...
I love my husband and he loves me. But I gotta say he loves sports almost as much as me - some days maybe a wee bit more. When we first started dating we regularly went to such sports events as softball and baseball games followed in the fall by football. In the winter, it's basketball and in the summer he loves to golf. If it's sports - he loves it. And so it's no wonder that he's wanted a sports room of his own for years.
When you have a busy family and the confines of a modest home it can be hard to spring a room for someone's hobbies. In our home, our two girls have taken over the most likely candidate for a hobby room as their play room. Toys are regularly thrown all over hte place. It's about as far away from a sports room as you can get.
But I know my hubby secretly imagines taking over that room. He'll assume that the kids will tire of toys (don't they just replace them with bigger toys?). He'll dream of the day when the girls leave us for college and then he'll take it over. His biggest loves are baseball and football so both sports would have to be accommodated in the decor. And of course there needs to be a huge flat screen TV for him and his buddies.
While he waits patiently for this manly masterpiece to form, he's 'collecting' all sorts of what he calls memorabilia and what I call junk. I'm pretty sure that we already have far more sports stuff than any sports room can hold.
I have a friend Jane who told her husband Frank that she was going to give him his dream - a sports room of his own. Ends up she decorated the master bath in a golf theme. Kind of funny when you think about it. She even got one of those really small flat screen TVs and put it up on a bathroom wall. They both got a big laugh out of it and once in awhile Frank does go into his special room to get away from the din of family life.
I have to think that my friend's idea has some merit. If I can find a small space in my home to give him for a small sports indulgence now, I can claim that toy room for me when the girls move on.
