Keeping SEO in mind when you design your site can make it much easier for you to get a good page rank and more traffic from day one.
Link Farms:
Some search engines use a recommendation system as part of how they rank your web site. So webmasters will often trade links with other webmasters. The different search engines see a link from web site A to web site B as a recommendation from web site A. a link farm is when a web master will have many different websites and will just fill them with links to all the pages of his other sites no matter how unrelated the items on the different sites may be.
Junk:
Thanks to those who would rather use what is known as "Black Hat" marketing techniques we can no longer open our emails without having to delete all the emails fro cheap pharmaceuticals and unsolicited stock tips, but it does not stop there. Now you have to worry when you do a web search that you may get to a spam site and not a site related to what you are searching for. Webmasters are now making sites with the purpose of bringing in traffic. When you go to the site all you find is some text that usually makes no sense at all and dozens of links and banner ads. These sites make money every time someone clicks one of those links. The site itself has no other purpose then to hold the links.
Text:
No matter what your site is about you have to have text on your pages. This text is used by the search engines to determine your relevancy in a keyword search. If your site is about blankets words like blanket, comforter or duvet will probably appear often on the site. The search engines recognize this and will use this information to bring up your page when someone types in the relevant words. Besides making sure that the text is relevant to your site it is also important to change and add text on a regular basis.
Page Rank:
Did you ever wonder how a site gets its page rank? Each search engine does it a bit different but the basics are the same. They have a rating system and once a month they check every website on the internet and the sites get put thru this rating process. They check things like ease of use, popularity, content changes since the last time it was checked and they come up with a number and that becomes your page ranking.
User Interface:
One of the things a search engine will look for is how simple your site will be for the end user. The site needs to be easy to get around and it should not be too difficult to find information listed on an inner page. If I am looking for something and I can not find it on your site in a few seconds I will just click on another site. So make sure to keep that in mind.
Factoring in the above information when building your website or taking it into account and redesigning you site will help you bring in more traffic.
